A case report by Dr. Yuji Okuno, Chief Director of Okuno Clinic, and Dr. Masahiko Shibuya, Director of the Kobe Sannomiya and Miyazaki Branches, has been published in the Journal of The Japanese Society for Joint Reconstruction (JSJR). The report details a case of recurrent intra-articular bleeding following total knee arthroplasty (TKA) that was successfully treated with genicular artery embolization (GAE).
In some instances, persistent knee swelling, pain, and joint effusion after TKA may be caused by intra-articular hematoma. Catheter-based vascular treatment offers an effective solution to these symptoms, potentially avoiding the need for revision surgery. This minimally invasive procedure, performed under local anesthesia, takes approximately 30 minutes and enables patients to walk and return home on the same day.
Reference Case
Recurrent knee pain due to intra-articular bleeding following total knee arthroplasty (TKA) in a woman in her 70s.
